Machu Picchu is an ancient Incan city that stands 4.710 feet high above sea level in the tropical forest of Peru. The city has always been surrounded by mystery, hidden from the Spaniard conquistadors until it was finally discovered in 1911 by Hiram Bingham, a professor from Yale. It didn`t take long for tourist to come pouring in from all corners of the world.
Unlike then, today visiting Machu Picchu is a lot easier. All you have to do is catch a flight from Cuzco and take the 3.5 hour train ride (btw this will be one of the most scenic train rides of your life). When you arrive you got two choices, a bus ride or hike the Inca Trail until you see one of the most scenic views in your life.
One thing is for sure, seeing the sacred city is a once-in-a-lifetime adventure!
